Ruto to launch affordable housing in Raila stronghold

President William Ruto will launch affordable housing project in Kibra, Nairobi next week, he has announced.

This will be the first time Ruto will be in Kibra after winning the presidential elections.

“Next week on Tuesday, I will break ground in Kibra Soweto B for a housing project which will deliver thousands on housing units,”Ruto said.

He was speaking at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi on Thursday when he led the Mashujaa Day celebrations.

Kibra is considered as former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s backyard.

He has received massive support in this area since he started vying for the presidency over the years.

According to Housing PS Charles Hinga, Soweto B will be the biggest social housing project undertaken in an informal settlement.

The project is part of the planned upgrade of the slum which has been divided into four zones and is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Housing.

The first phase of the project included Zone A which was completed in 2016.

However, Ruto said his government was keen on making affordable houses for Kenyans in a number of counties.

“Going forward we intend to collaborate with county governments to achieve a target of 500,000 in metropolitan counties,” he said.
