Raila camp splits as ODM MPs meet Ruto at State House

Lang'ata MP Felix Odiwuor Jalang'o (R), President William Ruto (C) and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The ODM party has distanced itself from a meeting that took place on Tuesday morning at the State House in Nairobi between President William Ruto and some of its MPs.

The Kenya Kwanza government will continue to be pressured to resign, the Orange party stated, accusing the MPs of attempting to weaken their leader Raila Odinga.

“Since the victory of our party leader Raila Odinga was stolen and the will of the people subverted after the August 9, 2022, General Election, some leaders have elected to undermine the leadership of the party and chosen to go against the will of the people who elected them to positions they hold,” ODM stated in a news release that was signed by Philip Etale, the party’s director of communication.

The ODM lawmakers who met the President and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua at State House include: Gideon Ochando (Bondo), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Mark Nyamita (Uriri), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Shakeel Shabir (Kisumu East), Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang’o (Lang’ata), Paul Abuor (Rongo) and Kisumu Senator Prof Tom Ojienda.

The ODM Party pleaded with its supporters not to be sidetracked by politicians it claimed were putting their own interests ahead of the wellbeing of the people.

“We know that in the quest for legitimate leadership, there are those who will fall by the wayside, and some will be compromised, but the movement remains unstoppable. This is a people’s movement aimed at defending the constitution of the land. History will judge harshly leaders who want to betray Kenyans by accepting handouts to scuttle the activities of the movement,” Etale said.

President Ruto stated in a brief press release issued by the State House on Tuesday that he will collaborate with leaders from all political parties for the country’s unity and economic transformation.

“Elections are over; we don’t want a polarized country. We will work for all Kenyans,” said President Ruto.
