Inspector General Koome rubbishes reports that police raided Matiang’i’s home

Reports that elite police conducted a raid on former interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i’s Karen residence in Nairobi have been denied by Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome.

Both Matiang’i’s lawyer Dunstan Omari and ODM leader Raila Odinga said that police had raided the former CS’s home without providing a justification for their actions.

However, Koome stated that contrary to popular belief, no NPS officer was dispatched to Matiangi’s home on the evening of February 9th.

“I wish to clarify that no police officer under the National Police Service was sent to former CS Fred Matiang’i residence at all,” Koome said.

Furthermore, there were claims that the aforementioned special unit was affiliated with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

EACC chief Twalib Mbarak, however, rejected the allegations, claiming that the anti-corruption organization had nothing to do with the alleged raid.

According to reports, Matiang’i was encircled by policemen on Wednesday night as they prepared to arrest him. The reason for the raid was not immediately clear.
