Tragic lightning strike claims life of woman in Sotik

A lightning strike has claimed the life of a woman and injured two others in Sotik, Bomet County. The incident occurred on Monday evening at around 6:30 pm when three women sought shelter under a tree near a maize farm.

Eyewitnesses described a sudden loud bang followed by a flash of light as the lightning hit the tree. The impact was so powerful that it split the tree trunk in half, scattering debris all around.

Local residents rushed to the scene and immediately called for help. The injured women were swiftly taken to Sotik Sub-County Hospital for medical attention. Tragically, one of the women, identified as Mary Chepkorir, did not survive her injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The other two women, Gladys Chebet and Emily Chepkemoi, are currently receiving treatment for their injuries. Doctors have stated that they are in stable condition and are expected to make a full recovery.

Sotik sub-county Police Commander, Jane Karanja, expressed her condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured women a speedy recovery during a press conference. She also urged residents to exercise caution during heavy rains and seek shelter in safe areas.

Lightning strikes are not uncommon during storms, and it is crucial for individuals to take necessary precautions to protect themselves. Experts advise seeking shelter in buildings rather than under trees, as trees can attract lightning. If caught in an open area during a storm, it is recommended to crouch down low, with feet together and head tucked in, and avoid standing near tall objects such as trees, metal poles, or bodies of water.

The community in Chesiliot area is mourning the loss of Mary Chepkorir, a highly respected and beloved member of the community. Friends and family remember her as a kind and generous woman who was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

As investigations into the incident continue, it serves as a somber reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature. The tragic incident has left the community in sorrow and mourning.
