Boy escapes death after hippo attacked him

A standard eight student in Bondo, Siaya County who was set to sit for his KCPE exams is nursing serious injuries after a Hippo attacked himin Nyamnwa Beach on the shore of Lake Victoria.

The incident happened on Sunday October 26, 2020.

Austine Onyango, who was playing with his friends, was attacked by the Hippo which had come out to graze in the nearby.

Onyango’s father, Meshack Okuku, confirmed the case after noting that the boy’s leg was severed by the animal.

However, the other children were not injured during the incident. Okuku who also serves as Siaya County Beach Management Network (BMU) manager, asked the government to intervene and end the Hippos menance.

“We are calling upon the government to intervene and curb the attacks,” stated Okuku.

Onyango was rushed to Bondo sub county hospital where he was treated and discharged.

The same incident was also witnessed in Mbita, Homabay County, mid September, where a boy was snatched by hippopotamus and dragged into Lake Victoria.
