Chicken earns Kakamega student academic sponsorship

DP Ruto and Evans Makokha on October 25, 2020 at Shianda, Kakamega

Evans Makokha, an undergraduate student at Egerton University who had deferred studies due to lack of school fees is now the happiest man on earth.

This is after Deputy President Dr. William Ruto pledged to pay the young man’s schools fees.

After deferring his studies, Mr. Makokha ventured into poultry farming hoping to raise enough money to pay school fees and also support his family which resides in Matungu constituency, Kakamega county. However, Makokha ostensibly had not settled down with the business. After getting wind that the DP was planning to visit a church near his home, he decided to surprise him with a chicken.

And just like that, the gesture changed his fortunes at Our Lady of Assumption Indangalasia Parish, where the guest worshiped.

Just before the DP took to the podium to make his remarks, the student gifted him the chicken which he selected from his farm.

“I really want to thank Evans Makokha, the chicken seller. He reminds me of those days when I used to do the same trade. He has brought me chicken and I say thank you…” Recounted the DP.

He continued, “He deferred his studies. I want you to go back to Egerton University. I will pay for all of your school fees. Your work will just be to study. Through education, we are able to realise our country’s development agenda.”

According to Dr. Ruto, the student, through his MP Justus Murunga, had informed him that he had started studying at Egerton University but deferred due to financial difficulties.
