The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has released a heartfelt statement extending their condolences to the victims of the Mashujaa Day stampede, a tragic incident that unfolded at Kericho Green Stadium on the eve of the national holiday.
In the official statement, UDA’s Secretary-General, Cleophas Malalah, conveyed deep sympathy for the lives lost and urged organizers of mass events to exercise utmost caution and prioritize safety measures.
Malalah also extended his condolences to the grieving families who lost their loved ones and wished a swift recovery to the injured.
“It is with a heavy heart that we witness the loss of lives on a day meant for nationwide celebration, a day dedicated to honoring our national heroes. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have suffered from this unfortunate incident. May God provide you with comfort and strength in these trying times. Poleni sana. May the departed souls rest in eternal peace,” remarked Malalah.
The remarks from the UDA party come shortly after Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki assured the nation that the government was conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
“We deeply regret this unfortunate incident and mourn alongside the families who have lost their loved ones today. Our hearts go out to all those affected, and we offer our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured,” added Kindiki.
The tragedy unfolded when a vendor selling tea near gate ‘C’ accidentally spilled hot tea onto a fire, leading to a panic as the public mistakenly interpreted it as teargas. The ensuing chaos resulted in the loss of four lives and left 13 individuals injured, including three police officers, a 67-year-old community health worker, and a community health volunteer.
“Several individuals who were attempting to access the stadium sustained injuries and were promptly transported to the Kericho County Referral Hospital using station motor vehicles and county government ambulances. Regrettably, four unidentified females have been confirmed deceased at the aforementioned hospital,” reported the police.
As investigations continue, Kenya remains in mourning, reflecting on the unexpected tragedy that marred a day intended to celebrate the nation’s heroes. The nation unites in extending their condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the recovery of the injured.
