Youth unite to protect girls against early pregnancy

As corona continues to increase, girls are at risk of getting early pregnancy and shame from association due to lack of sanitary pads during their menses.

As a result, a group of youth allies “Strong Tiles” in Likuyani Sub-county, Kakamega County, has come up with a plan of distributing sanitary towels to hundreds of girls in the region.

Annete Gift Luvanda who, the organizer of the program urged the youth to come together in support of young girls as a way of being role models.

“We have come together to give direction to the young ones in our villages as a way of correcting morals.” She said this in Nzoia ward during sanitary towels distribution exercise.

Annete added that it is a collective responsibility of providing a safe environment for girls in protecting them from early pregnancies and other social evils against them.

On the other hand, Benerd Masika, a member of the group says that they continue with the program from Nzoia ward to other regions in Kakamega county.

“As youths, we will provide pads depending on our capabilities to ensure that our girls are safe from early pregnancies.”

He used the opportunity to urge political leaders to support the group towards empowering the girl child.

The beneficiaries did not hide their happiness as they talked to Radio Halisi.

“We appreciate Strong Tiles for coming together in helping village teens. We had been suffering from shame due to menstruation. This will help us in actively engaging in other activities as well as academics.”
