MP Osoro denies bribery allegations

Silvanus Osoro, the Majority Whip of the National Assembly, has vehemently denied any involvement in an alleged bribery scandal that unfolded at an event in Bomet. The legislator found himself at the center of controversy when he was summoned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) earlier this week.

Responding to the EACC’s summons through his legal representative, Adrian Kamotho, Osoro clarified that he is currently out of the country and has not yet received any official correspondence, notice, or communication related to the allegations.

In a statement issued by Osoro’s legal team, they stated, “Unequivocally, our client avers that the allegations being peddled against him are false and baseless.” They continued to emphasize, “Our client is a paragon of virtue, who has perpetually conducted himself most professionally and ethically. Our client has never engaged in any conduct whatsoever that would warrant the sensational accusations being recklessly leveled against him.”

Osoro demanded to be provided with concrete evidence supporting the allegations made against him, stressing that he is prepared to respond accordingly. He suggested that the allegations may have been politically motivated to exert pressure on the EACC to prosecute him.

“Notwithstanding the political machinations, our client does not doubt that he will effortlessly be able to prove his innocence if so required and restore the phenomenal trust and public confidence that he has diligently cultivated over the years,” his legal team asserted.

Furthermore, Osoro urged the EACC to confirm whether they were responsible for the summons related to his case. “If so, we urge that you promptly proceed to furnish us with copies of the same and any other concomitant material, including but not limited to the specific allegations and/or violations our client is purported to have committed. We are available to receive the same, at the point of delivery of this letter,” the statement read.

Osoro’s alleged involvement in the bribery scandal came to light when he was reportedly associated with remarks suggesting that some Members of Parliament engage in bribery to secure foreign trips.

In response to these allegations, the anti-graft agency ordered Osoro to present himself at the Integrity Centre headquarters on November 6, 2023, at 9 am to record an official statement. These alleged claims were made by Osoro on October 29 during the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) event organized by Bomet Women Representative Linet Chepkorir, popularly known as Toto.
