A man suffocated on Wednesday during baptism in River Densu, south of Accra city.

In a video doing rounds on social media, the 20-year-old Yaw Kyeremeh is seen stationed at the river banks together with a pastor who conducted the baptism.

Kyereme was immersed in water a second time after brief prayers but he did not emerge from the waters.

“A junior pastor had been arrested at the scene while police were still searching for the head pastor of the church involved in the baptism,” Accra Regional Police Command spokeswoman Afia Tenge told the BBC.

The deceased’s family is quoted by local media as saying that it does not blame any person for the drowning that happened on Sunday.

Police said the man’s body was in a mortuary, and an autopsy still needed to be done before it was given to the family for burial.
