The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) chairman Benjamin Teyari has dismissed claims that the ports of Mombasa and Lamu will be privatised. This comes after alleged misinformation by a section of the media and some coastal region leaders that the authority might privatise the ports.
Some of the leaders had expressed their opposition to Kenya Port Authority’s move to develop and operate some ports of Mombasa and Lamu assets through public-private patnerships (PPP).
Speaking at the port of Mombasa during a joint meeting between KRA and KPA boards Tayari clarified that KPA was undertaking a concession and not privatisation as speculated.
“KPA is not doing privatisation; what we are doing is a concession. There is a big difference between privatisation and concession,” he said.
He further explained that privatisation meant that they were giving away the port to be run fully by private investors. While on the other hand the authority was only leasing out some of its assets to private investors in a bid to bring more business to the ports and generate more revenue.
