Kitale man sentenced to 90 years in prison for raping and killing missionary worker

Kitale

A 24-year-old man was given a 90-year prison term by a Kitale court for raping and killing a 74-year-old Swedish national two years ago.

In February 2020, Chris Wanjala was convicted of the victim’s murder.

On Wednesday, Kitale Chief Magistrate Julius Ngarngar sentenced Wanjala, who was working for the victim at the time of the crime, to 90 years in prison and postponed Dominic Nyongesa’s punishment until after an evaluation of his age.

The judgment was adjourned until January 9 because Nyongesa, the second accused person, successfully claimed that he was a minor at the time of the offense.

The prosecution argued during the trial that the murder was a capital offense and asked the court to sentence the two defendants to the harshest term possible to act as a deterrent to future criminals.

The victim’s body was found with blood seeping from her private areas in the garage of her leased property in Kitale’s Milimani estate, the court heard.

Wanjala has fourteen days to challenge the verdict.

The deceased passed away while working as a missionary in Kitale.
