Kenyan-Assembled Smartphones Set to Hit the Market

In a much-anticipated development, the government-backed locally-assembled smartphones are gearing up for their market debut on October 30. ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo announced the release date, confirming that these smartphones will be available at a retail price of $40, approximately Sh6,000.

In response to inquiries from various sources, Mr. Owalo was reticent about revealing specific details concerning the phone’s specifications and the number of units in the initial batch. He simply stated, “Yes, the release date is on October 30, that’s all for now. We will release the rest of the details at the launch.”

The brand name of these smartphones and the method for identifying last mile retail outlets remain undisclosed.

This revised release date marks a two-month delay from the previously anticipated launch in August. Mr. Owalo had previously indicated the earlier date but subsequently refrained from providing updates on the project, despite repeated press inquiries.

These mobile devices are the result of collaboration between a three-member consortium consisting of Chinese dealer Shenzhen TeleOne Technology, Safaricom, and Jamii Telecommunications. The assembly of these smartphones takes place at the Konza Technopolis smart city and is a key component of the government’s efforts to enhance digital access and inclusion throughout the country.

President William Ruto initially announced this production plan in December of the previous year as part of his administration’s broader mission to revolutionize the nation’s digital economy. At the time, Dr. Ruto set an ambitious timeline to deliver affordable smartphones within eight to 12 months of the current year. If successful, this project is poised to be a significant game-changer in the digital landscape.
