The government is set to implement a fee system for the services offered at Huduma Centres nationwide, as revealed by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria. This announcement came on Monday following his official takeover from Aisha Jumwa.

The proposed fees will apply to services from both the public and private sectors, with the exact fee amounts left unspecified. However, it is anticipated that these fees will render the centers self-sustainable given the high volume of approximately 60,000 daily transactions.

Moses Kuria emphasized his commitment to ensuring that Huduma Centres no longer rely on funding from the Exchequer and become self-sufficient by generating their own revenue. He stated, “You have been enjoying this service for so long without paying for it. Now there will be no more free lunch. You have to pay for it.”

The primary goal of this initiative is to enable the 52 Huduma centres scattered across the nation to become financially independent, reducing their historical dependence on Exchequer funding. President William Ruto has challenged the Ministry to address the issue of sustainability, which led to this decision.

Furthermore, this move is intended to support national e-commerce endeavors, with Huduma Centres potentially becoming the backbone of these initiatives. Services that may be subject to these new fees include the renewal of driver’s licenses, national identity cards, and National Social Security Fund-related processes.
