Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha, has declared that schools will remain open despite the spike in Covid 19 positive cases.

Speaking to the media after touring several schools in Mumias and Malava on Friday, Magoha confirmed that 3 million learners in class eight, grade four and form four have resumed in the first phase of re-opening.

Magoha emphasised the need to ensure their safety in schools as government monitors the situation in the country in order to give the announcements when the other classes will resume.

This comes amid Coronavirus infections amongst sudents and teachers in various institutions.

In Machakos county, a form four student in Muumandu Secondary School in kalama sub county, tested positive for the virus.

A few days ago, Tononoka Secondary School and Star of the Sea School in Mombasa county, were closed after fifteen teachers tested positive for COVID 19.

In Kiambu County, a teacher in Mama Ngina Primary School in Kinoo, died from what was suspected to be Corona Virus complications. Another case was reported at St Peters Boys High School, Mumias in Kakamega County.

However, professor Magoha who termed the infection in learning institutions as a ” small pocket outbreak,” dismissed reports that several schools had missed out on the ongoing Kenya National Examination Councils ( KNEC) assesments.

According to Magoha, the assesment is an ongoing activity that will ensure all students are assesses.

The number of positive cases in the country continues to shoot, on Friday, October 23rd MOH recorded 631 positive cases, 371 recoveries and 14 new deaths.
