A veteran journalist Robert Masai has asked the county government of Bungoma to consider Mt. Elgon in the sharing of the BBI cake.

The Kajiado-based journalist said this during a funeral function at Kaptama.
“We may be ignored in the proposed constituency subdivision by the BBI report in case IEBC focuses on the population…”

Mr. Masai stated that a region can be made a constituency if it has a population size of at least 132,000 people, which the region does not merit.

” If they base on population, this region may not benefit from the report. It will be wise if constituency subdivision is based on the development aspect since the region is underdeveloped…”

Masai’s call was backed by Morgan Kimtai Ndiema who was the Secretary of the committee that proposed Sabaots’ recommendations.

“…from 1993, other regions have been sub-divided but our region has remained the same. We need the region to be divided into Kopsiro, Elgon and Cheptais constituencies.”

He suggests that if the division is impossible, Mt. Elgon constituency should be merged with Trans Nzoia county as a way of enhancing exclusivity of Sabaots in development.

Mr. Masai further posed a challenge to parents to embrace education for children in order to enlighten the society. He says that he has rubbed shoulders with prominent personalities in the country among them President Uhuru Kenyatta due to education.

“I have been in the state house several times, had talks with prominent politians due to education. Therefore, if we want to eradicate poverty in our counties, education is a vital tool.”
On Covid-19, the journalist urged residents to follow laid down protocols in curbing the spread of Coronavirus.

“I was the first journalist to report the first case of corona infection in the country. I have witnessed many prominent people succumb to the virus. Therefore, let’s do away with misconceptions about corona and follow containment measures…”

Julia Wambalaba, a wife to Machewa ward MCA, insisted that education is the only instrument that will bring the poor and the rich on the same table.
