Machakos Governor warns Shalom Hospital after woman delivers at reception as nurses watch, enjoy tea

Nurses at Shalom

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has said his administration would not allow patients from his County to be mistreated following a suspected case of negligence at Shalom Hospital in Athi River, Machakos County.

A woman was left to give birth at Shalom Hospital’s reception area as nurses watched and enjoyed their tea.

Top Health Officials from the County were dispatched to the facility Monday morning to seek more findings on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Officials from my Government and the Kenya Medical Board & Nursing board will this morning visit the privately owned & managed Shalom Hospital in Athi River. We will not allow patients in any facility – Govt or otherwise – in my region, to be treated inhumanely. Watajua Hawajui,” said Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua on Monday.

The occurrence was exposed over the Easter weekend in a video recorded by a man who had taken his wife to the medical clinic.

As per the man, a lady in labor was brought into the clinic on a wheelchair and three nurses who were at the office were told that it was an emergency case.

The medical attendants are, in any case, said to have continued taking their tea and did not take care of the lady in spite of her asking for help.

One medical attendant is accounted for to have told the lady to stand on her feet and it is by then that she gave birth with the infant dropping to the floor.
