The sugar bill is today before the National Assembly in its final stage. If passed it will now wait for senate concurrence then presidential assent.

The Bill was sponsored by Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi, and seeks among other issues, to compel sugar millers to pay sugarcane farmers in good time.

The Bill comes at a time when the sugar sector is grappling with a myriad of challenges, with farmers going unpaid.

However, Wamunyinyi is optimistic that it will be passed into the Law, and thus put to an end the farmers’ woes.

Sugarcane farmers at Nzoia Sugar Company have been holding demonstrations to demand for their pay.

The complaints were from various stakeholders and leaders from the western region alleging financial impropriety and non-payment of farmer’s arrears amounting to over Sh700 million.

They also claim that Makokha had withheld staff salaries to the tune of approximately Sh2 billion.

The demonstrations saw the then Managing Director Michael Wanjala Makokha suspended by Agriculture CS Peter Munya.

His position was taken by Dr. Chrispine Ogutu Omondi.
