Ugandan antagonist presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine was on Tuesday arrested after submitting his nomination papers to the election body according to his party’s spokesperson
Bobi Wine was drawn from his vehicle by armed police and involuntarily taken into a police van amid violent brawls between police and his followers.
“They (police) used a hammer and broke the windows of his vehicle and forcefully dragged him out … they bundled him into their own vehicle and took off,” said Joel Senyonyi, NUP party spokesman
Wine was later driven to his home by police amidst the chaos.
NUP Spokesman Joel Ssenyonyi was bruised amidst the mayhem as bobi was being escorted.
According to Ugandan media reports, Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said he is yet to receive an update on the arrest and assured to make his remarks later.
The 38 year old musician who joined politics intends to put to end Yoweri Museveni’s 34 year reign, which makes him Africa’s third longest-ruling president. Uganda goes to the ballot in February 2021.
The politician’s Wine’s youthful age and his music have given him a large following in the comparatively young country of 42 million people, daring the reign of the ruling National Resistance Movement party and drawing a security crackdown on his supporters.
Ever Since kyagulanyi expressed his presidential desire, police and the military have recurrently dispersed his gatherings, and beaten and incarcerated his followers.
