Tononoka High School and Star of the Sea Secondary School in Mombasa have been closed indefinitely.

This is after positive cases of COVID-19 were reported in the schools.

Insiders confided that some teachers and students’ test results turned positive forcing management to shut down the two institutions.

Mombasa County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo declined to reveal the number of those who tested positive saying they are still waiting for compilation of all the test results.

He however, admitted that Mombasa County is finding it difficulty to deal with the increasing number of COVID-19 patients as hospitals are full to capacity.

“Mombasa county is swimming in rough waters when it comes to handling the high number of Coronavirus patients who have flooded hospitals, causing a shortage in beds particularly in ICUs” he said on Wednesday.

Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at the Mama Ngina Waterfront on Tuesday, Commissioner Kitiyo had warned Mombasa residents against violating COVID-19 guidelines saying that the recent trend is worrying.

He revealed that it is becoming increasingly difficult to get unoccupied beds at Intensive Care Units (ICUs).

Similar problem, he said is at the emergency sections in hospitals within the county.

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, speaking at the event, also warned that county officers will have to re-enforce tough measures should the situation exacerbate.

“I urge you, the people of Mombasa, if you want us to do well on COVID-19 please wear your mask when you are close to people,” he said.
