SportPesa, Betin shut down over failure by government to renew operation licences

Betting firms, SportPesa and Betin, have closed down activities in Kenya refering to overwhelming tax collection and disappointments from the government.

The betting firm SportPesa said it would continue activities when Kenya sets up satisfactory taxation and friendly administrative condition.

Through its CEO Ronald Karauri, SportPesa said the government’s choice to force a 20 percent tax on every single stake is damaging on both their clients and treasury.

“Until such time that adequate taxation and non-hostile regulatory environment is returned, the SportPesa brand will halt operations in Kenya.” read the statement in part.

The move comes after another firm, Betin, sent home every one of its workers saying they have come up short on finances.
