Health workers in Kakamega county are walking a tightrope, after their 40 colleagues contracted the deadly Coronavirus.

A doctor working at the County’s referral hospital, and who spoke on conditions of anonymity due to protocol, said the number is worrying as the county government has turned a blind eye on them.

“As we speak now, the county hospital is not well facilitated; the county government is not well prepared…the contact tracing here, is at less than 1%.” He lamented.

He further revealed that 270 residents tested positive for the virus just in the period between September 30, 2020 and October 23 the same year.

Unwilling to speak the truth

The medic further grieved over silence by the county government in regard to the identity of county officers who have tested positive for Covid-19.

Shockingly, he claimed that Kakamega county assembly deputy speaker, amongst other staff at the county offices are among those admitted at Kakamega county referral hospital with the virus.

“Why are they hiding; how many of this staff are positive? As I speak to you, there are members the county government office that have been positive… the deputy speaker is currently admitted.” Revealed the medic.

Meanwhile, the doctor castigated the Ministry of Education for failing to put in place mechanisms in line with the MoH protocols, revealing that four students from St. Peters Mumias are quarantined at Likuyani Medical centre, after testing positive for Coronavirus.

“Opening of schools was done abruptly and in haste.” “I,” he continued, “can tell you this: none of these teachers were sensitized on Covid because if they did, then they would know how to break the news to the concerned parents, they would know how to handle the situation.”

However, the county’s health CEC Collins Matemba, through a phone call denied the report, adding that the county plans to employ more health workers.
