As COVID-19 continues to spread in the country, church leaders have been advised to take the lead in protecting their members.
This is according to the deputy county commissioner for Mt. Elgon sub county, David Koskei. He said this during a meeting with church leaders and security officers at International Revival Campaign church in Kapsokwony.
“It is the responsibility of the administration and religious leaders to ensure that the residents are well informed on COVID-19 and how to combat the spread. This is possible if the leaders put in place measures such as handwashing points and social distance,” he said.
Mr. Koskei organised religious leaders into groups that will help in fostering COVID-19 adherence of the faithfuls to Corona regulations. He added that such groups may be used in peace preaching in the region in case of heat in political differences.
On pregnancy cases, he urged the leaders to offer guidance and counselling to pregnant girls in order to eliminate abortion and suicidal cases in the society.
“…the police have a role of investigating and arresting culprits of early pregnancies, but the situation may not be reversed. Pregnant girls need emotional, psychological and physical support for them to deliver and embark on learning.”
Consequently, Mt. Elgon Sub county police commander Samuel Anampiu advised religious leaders to solve family issues in order to reduce domestic violence cases especially during this Covid-19 season.
“…since church leaders are close to the people in the society, they ought to give guidance to couples as a way of amicably solving family problems,” he said.
On his part, Pastor Vincent Mogun of IRC church advised his fellows to maintain peace especially this period when BBI pot is boiling.
