Public service vehicle (PSV) operators were forced to return extra fare they were charging passengers in Kisii as police proceed with the countrywide matatu crackdown.

At Menyikwa along the Kisii-Ogembo road several passengers were refunded their money by Matatu operators who had doubled the fare.

Normally, commuters pay Sh70 between Kisii Town and Ogembo.

On Tuesday, passengers were forced to part with Sh150 but not until police intervened.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi issued a directive on Monday to arrest and charge PSV operators overcharging passengers, adding they risk to lose their licenses if found guilty.

He said police will not relent in making sure public service vehicles comply with the law.

In Kisii, Police obeyed the orders and immediately arrested all those who had hiked fare from different destinations and ordered them to refund the extra amount.

Matiang’i had additionally instructed traffic officers to stop matatus and ask passengers the amount of fare they have been charged.
