Police officers were yesterday caught on camera ferrying stranded commuters in a police vehicle.

This is following a crackdown on public service vehicles that have not complied with the re-established Michuki traffic rules.

The officers charged Sh400, instead of the normal Sh200 charged by PSV operators on the same stretch.

Some of the cops in uniform, were seen picking commuters from Marigat bus station.

According to one of the passengers in the government’s vehicle, who did not want her name to be mentioned for fear of being victimised, the cops told them they were headed to Nakuru town for an assignment and would like to ‘assist’ willing passengers at the Sh400 fee.

“We did not have an issue boarding the vehicle. In fact, we were happy because all we wanted was to get to our destination,” she said.

Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Francis Munyambu was contacted to comment on the issue. He said it was not right for police to take advantage of the PSV crisis to make money by transporting civilian passengers.

“Police vehicles are meant for official duties and not for conducting transport business. We are investigating the matter and action will be taken against officers involved,” said Munyambu.
