Panic as student tests positive for COVID-19 at Maranda High School

Tension continues to build at Maranda High school after one student tested positive for Corona Virus. A report by The Standard has revealed that the Ministry of Health has begun targeted testing following the outcome of the test.

Siaya County’s Director of Public health Kennedy Orwenjo confirmed the case revealing that the student tested positive over the weekend and the target testing is being done on close contacts.

The Student who tested Positive is under isolation at the Bondo sub-county hospital’s isolation unit.

Orwenjo has however dismissed claims that they have begun mass testing to all the over 600 Form Four students at Maranda High School, noting that they still do not have the capacity of doing the mass testing.

He also dismissed claims that there is one of the teachers from the same school who has also been put in isolation.

“The targeted testing just began yesterday and we are still waiting for the results,” he said.

This comes barely two days after Tononoka Secondary School principal Mohammed Khamis succumbed to the virus.

The late had been admitted a Mombasa hospital since last week and succumbed on Monday afternoon.

The Tononoka Secondary School is still under closure after 11 teachers contracted the virus.

Even as the virus continue to cause panic in schools, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha revealed that candidates will remain in schools.

Magoha emphasized the need to ensure their safety in schools as government monitors the situation in the country.

Corona Virus cases in the country continue to rise with the total number of cases surprising the 50,000 mark. As of Tuesday 27th October total cases in the country were 50,833, with 403 recoveries and 14 deaths.
