Over 3, 000 passengers arrested in PSV crackdown

More than 22,000 traffic offenders have been arrested since the enforcement of Michuki rules began on November 12, officials said.

Among those arrested were 3,481 passengers and 451 were boda boda riders, according to Central regional commissioner Wilson Njega.

Most boda boda riders were arrested for lacking helmets, licences, insurance and carrying extra passengers.

It is reported that the government has collected a reasonable amount of money through fines from the offenders.

Police information indicates 3,000 offenders were captured in Nairobi, another 6,000 in Central and 3,769, in Nyanza.

They made 3,638 captures in Western, 2,148 in Rift Valley, 3,200 at the Coast and 2,320 in Eastern.

In Nairobi, most guilty parties were found not to have affixed their safety belts. Others were people on foot crossing the road at the wrong places and drivers surpassing the speed limits.

The base fine imposed was Sh500 for neglecting to fasten a seat belt with the guilty parties facing a 30-day imprison term.

As per sources, those driving faulty vehicles were slapped with a fine of Sh100, 000 or risk detainment for three years.

Both touting and conductors without permit were fined Sh2, 000 with a risk of three months in prison.

The guilty parties likewise had the alternative of paying through M-Pesa.

Larger part of the Public Service Vehicles seized were unroadworthy and had invalid inspection documents.
