The headquarters of Kakamega county government has been closed for seven days after a surge in Coronavirus infections in the past few days.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya on Wednesday October 28, 2020 ordered all county staff to be tested for the virus after announcing the closure of business at the county headquarters.

This comes barely a day after the county assembly called off sittings for a fort night after three MCAs tested positive for the virus.

Kakamega County has recorded 316 Covid cases, out of which 57 are healthcare workers, mostly on home-based care.

“Today I have chaired the county multi-agency team which established that the virus is spreading fast in the county because residents have constantly ignored the protocols and restrictions that had been put in place by the ministry of health to curb the spread of the pandemic,” Oparanya said.

Senior officers in Governor Oparanya’s office are among those affected.  According to Oparanya seven people have so far succumbed to the virus in the county.

The team decided to intensify adherence to the Covid-19 regulations and restrictions which includes banning of all political meetings and rallies.

Oparanya said health facilities in the county are stretched by high numbers of the Covid-19 cases, adding that home-based care is encouraged to decongest the facilities.
