Murder suspect Lawrence Waruinge Pleads not Guilty

Lawrence Warunge, the key suspect in the assassination of his four family members and an employee at Karura area in Kiambaa, Kiambu County, has been charged with five counts of murder.

Appearing in a cybernetic court sitting before Lady justice Mary Kasango, Warunge was charged with murdering his family members including his  father Nicholas Warunge, mother Anne Warunge, brother Christian Njenga, nephew Maxwell Njenga and construction worker James Kinyanjui on the night of January 5-6, 2021.

He however denied the charges.

The court ordered that the culprit be incarcerated at Nairobi Industrial Area Prison awaiting the pre-trial hearing set for May 11, 2021.

The 22-year-old, who has been in police cells since he was detained in January,  following sanction that he is mentally steady and fit to stand trial.

Warunge’s lover Sarah Muthoni, who was earlier presented before court as the second suspect, is anticipated to be a State witness in the case.

The court had on January 26, 2021 ruled that Lawrence was unfit to be tried in after a psychiatric report was presented at the Kiambu law court.

Waruinge, a university student said that he chose to eradicate the four members of his family since they were talking ill of him behind his back.

He told investigators that he had originally deliberated to kill everyone including his two remaining sisters who are in school, but his plans were thwarted when the two returned to school on December 5.
