Police have today arrested a number of commuters and matatu operators in Mombasa following crackdown on those breaking COVID-19 regulations.

Changamwe police boss Joseph Kavoo said over 100 matatus were impounded during the early morning raid.

“The occupants of the vehicles have been taken to the Changamwe Police Station,” he said.

Kavoo narrated that the commuters lacked masks and the vehicle operators had not provided them with water and soap to wash their hands.

According to the police boss, they will be arraigned in court and charged with flouting public health rules.

All PSV vehicle users are supposed to wear masks that must cover the mouth and nose as required by the Ministry of Health to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Each organization, business outlet and all sellers are likewise expected to give either water and soap to customers or sanitizer endorsed by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
