IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati & colleagues to be left jobless if BBI is passed!

Chairman of the IEBC and his colleagues will be left jobless if the Building Bridges Initiative is passed.

This is because the report by the BBI steering committee that was unveiled on Wednesday 21st October suggests Kenya gets new IEBC commissioners before 2022.

The report was on Wednesday handed over to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM party leader Raila Odinga at the Kisii State House Lodge.

According to the report, recruiting new commissioners ahead of the 2022 General Election, saying the move will strengthen faith in IEBC.

The committee suggested that there should be clear and proper induction of the new commissioners’ responsibilities and management of elections in general.

“They are to be given a thorough grounding in matters of corporate governance as it relates to IEBC and the relationship between the commissioners and the secretariat in particular.”

Also, the committee has suggested that the commission’s staff should be recruited on a three-year term contract which is renewable once, based on their performance.

The committee has said that the composition of the commission should reflect the face of Kenya at all levels.

“There should be clear guidelines and rules on gender representation and inclusivity.”

This recommendation by the BBI report comes just days after Deputy President William Ruto revealed that even if ODM leader Raila Odinga’s brother Oburu Odinga is made the IEBC chairman he(Ruto) will still win the election.

During the unveiling of the report the President hit back at the Building Bridges Initiative critics saying they should show leadership when they read the report rather than creating division.

“We are not looking for the things we disagree about. Let us bring that consensus and move forward. I want to plead with my political colleagues that this is not the time to create division. This is the time for each and every person to show leadership,” he said.

The report is expected to be officially launched on Monday 26th October at the BOMAS of Kenya where the BBI task force is to take Kenyans through the report line by line in a bid to ensure everybody understands the report. DP William Ruto was missing in action while the president and ODM leader Raila Odinga were receiving the report.
