Girl child must be given equal opportunity in leadership – Senator Mercy Chebeni

The World girl child day has been marked in style, as girls were urged to stand out and speak up on pressing issues among them health and sexual harassment by their male counterparts.

Speaking on Saturday to hundreds of girls in Chemses, Elgon ward Bungoma county, nominated Senator Mercy Chebini used the chance to encourage the girls to embrace academics and shy away from sexual excitements to avoid early pregnancies.

”We have been having talks from Chepkube, Cheptais and here in Chemses and we are happy when sencitizing our girls. We have taught them on how to use their voices as the theme of this year states, ‘my voice our future. ‘ Chebeni spoke after having a talk with the teenagers and issued them with sanitary pads.

She added, “The girl child goes through a lot of challenges especially during their menstruation period as poor or just careless parents fail to provide sanitary towels as well as psychological support as required.”

The talk was organized by the Lord is our Saviour Church in conjunction with FPYK group. Chebeni assured the attendants that there are other similar programmes that she is working on to ensure the safety of girls in Bungoma county.

Other political leaders present encouraged the girl child to boldly report rotten behaviors against them to relevant authorities. They added that the female gender should be given equal employment opportunities as well as in political leadership.

On the other side Sarah Chelimo, a director of a non-governmental organization FPFK urged the government and other partners to come up with other strategies to address challenges affecting teens.

Dorcus Chepkorir, one of the beneficiaries of the program didn’t hide her happiness, appreciating Miss Chebin for the talk as well as sanitary pads. The girls promised to focus on education for a better tomorrow.
