From governor to ‘Evangelist’, Sonko preaches hope to Kenyans

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko on Saturday wowed Kenyans with his evangelical message, with some encouraging him to consider doing full-time evangelism.

Known for his flamboyancy and flashy lifestyle, Sonko took Kenyans by surprise when he penned down an emotional message, full of hope.

Although not clear what inspired him, it is likely that the message was inspired by tribulations in his political journey.

“Doing the right thing does not guarantee that you will never find yourself on the wrong side of the law,” Sonko wrote, referring his ‘congregant to the Biblical Joseph.

“Think of Joseph who found himself in prison because he did the right thing and refused to sleep with his master’s wife.”

According to him, Joseph should have won a medal, but surprisingly he ended up in gaols.

He talks of Job, another character in the Jewish mythology “whom the Bible says was more righteous than any man who lived in his generation…. but what does he get in return?” Sonko poses

In his lamentations, Sonko reaffirms that “as long as we live on this earth, good things will happen to bad people and bad things will have to good people, or so it will seem.”

However, he appeals to his ‘sheep’ to hold their peace and wait on God.

“Just like Joseph, Job, and Jesus wait on God because He will vindicate you.” He concludes, adding, “Don’t let the situation change you.”

Sonko was impeached on December 3, 2020, after a total of 88 MCAs out of 122 voted to kick him out of the office. He was impeached over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The Senate voted to remove Sonko from office as Nairobi governor, ending his 40-month chaotic reign at City Hall.

His impeachment was upheld by the majority of senators (27) against 16 on December 18, 2020.
