Forest conservation a collective responsibility – KFS chairman Peter Kinywa

As a way of conserving environment, the national chairman of Kenya Forest Service (KFS) Peter Kinywa in conjunction with Bungoma county government has planted eleven thousand trees in Mt. Elgon.

During the function which took place at Chemwesus area, leaders addressed residents on the importance of forest conservation.

”As KFS, we have a plan of ensuring that we conserve the environment in this region since it’s the focal point of water and agriculture in Bungoma. Today, we have planted eleven thousand trees in this reclaimed land…” Mr. Kinywa said.

He further encouraged farmers to register with Kenya forest research Institute in order to secure tenders for nursery tree supply to his department.

Bungoma county Environment CEC on his part urged the government to set aside funds for Mt. Elgon elephant maternity as a way of improving tourism sector in the county.

”I urge the national government to gazette Webuye hills under the county government for the national government has neglected this resource.”

He said, insisting on the cooperation of forest residents in conversation of the forest, saying that charcoal burning should be stopped in the region.

Kenya Wildlife services officers present warned residents against cutting down of trees.

“We as KWS can not manage to conserve our ecosystem without the full support of the citizens, the success of this forest is a collective responsibility.”

The officials further urged residents to continue observing government directives on Corona virus pandemic as a way of reducing corona infections in the country.
