boat accident

The loss of life from an accident where a boat capsized in Lake Victoria on Saturday evening has ascended to somewhere around 29.

Earlier reports by Ugandan police shown that 10 individuals died, 40 others suffered injuries and others were as yet caught under the water in the submerged boat.

As indicated by Ugandan media outlets, about 100 individuals were on the boat drinking and merry-making.

Among them was Prince David Wasajja who is a sibling of Buganda King Ronald Mutebi, artist Iryn Namubiru and business man John Fredrick Kiyimba who were all rescued.

The reason for the accident is yet to be set up however addressing Ugandan media outlet Daily Monitor, Asuman Mugenyi, chief of operations for the Uganda police, credited it to over-loading and poor weather.

“We expect (the number of passengers) is beyond the capacity of the boat. It was overloaded and unfortunately people were drunk. We suspect the mechanical condition of the boat and the weather contributed to the sinking,” Mr. Mugenyi was quoted by Daily Monitor.
