As Kenya battles with the rising Coronavirus cases, school heads in Mt.Elgon sub-county, Bungoma are now grappling with fear.

Spot checks by Radio Halisi revealed that day schools are at risk of getting infected by the virus due to inadequate infrastructure.

“We have done all we can including the provision of water points in our institution but the social distance remains a challenge,” said Chemoge headmaster Mr. Sibweche.

However, he added saying, “regrettably, we have halted the boarding section because we lack supporting facilities.”

Samuel Munialo, Principal of Kaborom Secondary school in Kaptama ward says that his institution is at risk as it lacks enough infrastructure to accommodate learners. He says that the school has a population of about 320 learners with two permanent classrooms.

“We have a problem with infrastructure since we lack administration block and enough classes to accommodate students.”

He further said his school has a low turn up of learners as they might have ventured into rock mining and bodaboda business due to poverty rocketed by corona.

“We have a total of 43 Candidates but seven have not reported…I urge the local leadership to ensure that learners attend schools. We also have early pregnancy cases resulting from poverty at homes as parents fail to provide for the girls. Consequently, Boda Boda operators take advantage of them.”

Mr. Munialo fears that corona is likely to spread as students may carry the virus from homes to school and vice versa. This, he says, puts teachers and other school workers at risk.

On the other hand, Isaac Musanii of Chesiro Secondary speculates that low turn up of learners is linked to fear among parents regarding Covid-19, hence not allowing learners to class.
