Congolese singer Tshala Muana has been arrested.

Her arrest was confirmed by her producer Claude Mashala, who  said the musician was detained by National Intelligence Agency (ANR) officers over a controversial song titled ‘Ingratitude’.

Speaking to a Kenyan daily by phone on Monday evening, fellow musician and bassist Lofombo Gode said Ms Muana was arrested in Kinshasa amid speculation over the ‘deeper meaning’ or interpretation of lyrics which appear to have offended some government officials.

“Though no names are mentioned in the song, it was seen as intended to send a different message.” He said.

Relatives of the popular musician, 62, said agents from the ANR took her away in Kinshasa, saying she was wanted for questioning.

Claude Mashala, a producer, stated that Muana was “treated like a criminal, regardless of her state of health.”

Part of the song goes, “trahison eloko mabe, Juda ateka Yesu po na mbongo suka, suka alelaka yeh” which loosely translates to Treason is a bad thing. Judas sold Jesus because of money but later regreted.

The lyrics are perceived to be directed at President Felix Thisekedi, who succeded Joseph Kabila.

Tshala Muana is a public supporter of the former head of state and the People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD).

She is among the artistes who are perceived to be very close to former DR Congo President Joseph Kabila, having been nominated as a Member of Parliament by his father Laurent Kabila
