Religious leaders in Meru County, now want the government led by President Uhuru Kenyatta to put in measures to boost Kenyans economically during this lockdown period.

The leaders have said this owing to the tough measures put in place by the president few days ago to control the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Speaking at a press briefing in Igembe Constituency, bishop Stephen Kalunyu of NICA church expressed that many Kenyans are passing through a hard time following the new regulations, as many of them already lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

Kalunyu, has asked that the government temporarily suspends taxes on basic items, and to people earning less money as salaries. He has also asked that the government establishes a substantial plan to continue helping the elderly in the society as well.

Jacob Kubai who is also a minister in the same church, has asked the government to cushion residents of Igembe and Meru county at large from their suffering, as a majority of them depend on khat (miraa) farming as their source of living. According to Kubai, miraa farmers should be assisted to gain market for their products through the ministry of agriculture.

Kubai and Kalunyu have also asked that the ministry of health speeds up the vaccination process, so that as many Kenyans as possible can be immune to the virus, and hence reduce the infection rate in the country.
